Şizofreni ve Glutensiz Diyet

Abstract

Gluten bazı hastalıkların etiyolojisindeki rolü nedeniyle sağlık profesyonelleri için önemli bir araştırma konusudur. Glutenin vücuttaki inflamatuar etkisi gluten ile birçok hastalığın arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesine neden olmuştur. Gastrointestinal sistem ve merkezi sinir sistemi arasında mevcut olan ilişki sebebiyle, bağırsak geçirgenliğinin bozulduğu durumlarda nöropsikiyatrik hastalıkların ortaya çıkabilme olasılığı son yıllarda gündeme gelmiştir. Patofizyolojisinde glutenin rolü olduğu düşünülen birçok nöropsikiyatrik hastalık bulunmaktadır. Otizm spektrum bozukluğu, epilepsi, iki uçlu bozukluk ve şizofreni bunlardan bazılarıdır. Bunların arasında şizofreni ve gluten ilişkisi 1960’lı yıllardan beri araştırılmaktadır. 2.Dünya Savaşı sırasında buğday tüketiminin azalması ile orantılı şekilde, şizofreni tanısı alan insanların sayısındaki azalma bilim insanlarının dikkatini çekmiştir. Kesin tedavisi olmayan şizofreni hastalığı için alternatif tedavi arayışları bu konuda yapılan araştırmaları yoğunlaştırmıştır. Bu arayış sonunda şizofreni hastalarında glutensiz diyet denenmiştir. Şizofreni hastalarında glutensiz diyet uygulaması konusunda yapılan araştırmalarda çelişkili sonuçlar olmakla birlikte, ortak bir kanıya varılmıştır. Bir kişide şizofreni gelişmesinin risk faktörü eğer gluten maruziyetiyse, glutensiz diyet şizofreninin bazı alt gruplarının ilaçsız tedavisinde yeni bir umut olabilir.

Gluten is an important research topic for health professionals because of its role in the etiology of some diseases. The inflammatory effect of gluten in the body has led to the examination of the relationship between gluten and many diseases. Due to the relationship between the gastrointestinal system and the central nervous system, the possibility of neuropsychiatric diseases in cases of impaired intestinal permeability has come to the fore. There are many neuropsychiatric diseases that are thought to have a place in the pathophysiology of gluten. Autism spectrum disorder, epilepsy, bipolar and related disorders and schizophrenia are some of them. The relationship between schizophrenia and gluten has been investigated since the 1960s. The decrease in the number of people diagnosed with schizophrenia, in proportion to the decrease in wheat consumption during World War II, attracted the attention of scientists. The search for alternative treatments for schizophrenia, which has no definitive cure, has intensified research on this subject. At the end of this search, gluten-free diet was tried in patients with schizophrenia. Although there are conflicting results in studies on gluten-free diet practice in schizophrenia patients, a consensus has been reached. If gluten exposure is a risk factor for a person to develop schizophrenia, the gluten-free diet may offer new hope for the non-drug treatment of some subgroups of schizophrenia.
